Stages of NLA:
The Chocolate Analogy

The process of Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) that gestalt language processors go through can sometimes be complicated to envision... so let's sweeten the deal with The Chocolate Analogy!

The chocolate bars themselves each represent a full, unmitigated gestalt. If we break off a row (or part of the gestalt), we can combine with other rows in a process known as mitigation. After this, we can break down even further to the individual squares of chocolate, which is finally when we hear those freed words, and can start combining referentially. Lastly, the individual squares can be combined in beginning grammar to form novel, self-generated language.

Declarative Language:
A Happier Alternative to Questions and Directives

Especially useful for GLPs and late talkers, declarative language offers a gentler approach to communication by *inviting children to act* as opposed to pressuring them to respond in a particular or expected way.  Whereas questions and directives are a means to an end, declarative statements actually increase independence by giving the child the space they need to notice what's happening in their environment, process what has been said to them, and then respond with their own thoughts and ideas.

In other words, declarative language helps to create space for connection and is a fantastic tool for child-led play.

Gestalt Language Learning

Halle's story, Gestalt Language Learning, offers a heartwarming look into the life of Joey: a young student who learns language by imitating what other people say—because he is a gestalt language processor! As Joey’s classmates learn about his unique way of expressing himself, they discover the importance of being supportive language role models. By embracing different communication styles, Halle’s story highlights how understanding and inclusivity can help everyone feel valued and understood.
